Small is Beautiful

When Joshua Onysko started Pangea Organics in his garage a little over twenty years ago, the goal was to make products that did not irritate the skin from ingredients that were good for people and the planet. The humble beginnings, including selling the soaps at farmers markets, say a lot about why small businesses are so important to our communities, our health, and the planet.

Founders with vision and purpose who start small, are the way big industries change. According to a recent Forbes article, small businesses not only are more resilient, more flexible, and more innovative, but they are actually a big driver in the economy. The same article tells us that, “According to the U.S. Small Business Association (SBA), small businesses of 500 employees or fewer make up 99.9% of all U.S. businesses and 99.7% of firms with paid employees.” So if you want to change the face of an industry, start with a small business because we are almost all the businesses out there!

Consumers also matter more with small businesses, and consumer needs, opinions, and values drive small businesses to innovate. Joshua’s desire to create products with transparency, integrity, and a commitment to doing what’s best for people over profits is visible in everything we do. And you, our community, mirror our values and drive us to succeed and meet your needs.

We made a decision, which we were small enough and flexible enough to do, to go #plasticfree in our packaging. A lot of big companies have expressed the desire to do the same, but so far the hurdles have been too great for them to get there. Our small and thoughtful brand did it - though it was not easy. Now, we have let the world know it’s possible. Now, consumers don’t have to settle for half measures when our planet is at stake. Now, our small business and our community of customers and friends are telling the big beauty industry that small is mighty and change is possible.

As consumers, we vote with our dollars, with the community we make, with the stories we tell our friends and with the infinite number of decisions we make every day. To choose change, take a look at our #plasticfree skincare. Small is beautiful, and so are you - we are meant for each other.
